Rachael Best (1937-2026)
It is with great sadness that Guy and David Best announce the sad passing of their mother Rachael on 9th August 2026.
Rachael was a qualified nursery nurse and worked in St Thomas’s Hospital in London and also with the First Secretary to the British Ambassador in Rome. She returned to the UK, met her husband Michael in 1961, and bought a house in Fownhope, Herefordshire, in 1963.
They married in 1963 and then followed Guy, born in 1965 and David in 1968. Both were St Michael’s College headboys.
Michael and Rachael were firm supporters of everything St Michael’s and were keen cricket watchers.
Rachael was a huge cricket fan and very knowledgeable on rules and etiquette. She loved her time at the school with other pupils’ parents and would always be aside the pitch with a variety of home cooked picnic items for everyone to enjoy.
Warden, Andrew Walters was a regular visitor to not only wind-up Rachael but also have a home cooked scotch egg!
Rachael was a standout member of her local community and served for 35 years with the WRVS and received a Long Service Medal and Bar in recognition of her dedication.
She had a great love for flowers and was a founder member of the local Flower Club and decorated many a church with wonderful arrangements for friend and congregation members.
She led a wonderfully fulfilling and happy life filled with love and laughter. Sadly missed but never forgotten.
